About Linda Kirstein:
My art is an ever-evolving process of creativity that ebbs and flows through various media. Although acrylic paint is a favorite, I use inks, paper, textiles, metals and wood.
In this show I am featuring some new work in acrylics, and a series of upcycled mixed media, using textiles and aged wood. My Heelan Coos and Ewes were born in a conversation with a Scotswoman, while we were on vacation in Mexico. In her accent it sounded like a “heathen coon”. After a conversation with my Scottish sister-in-law, I understood the woman actually said “highland cow”, but her accented dialect rendered it as “heelan coo”. With some tartan remnants, assorted other textiles, and a few secret ingredients, I created my own version of a Highland Cow, otherwise known as a Heelan Coo! There had to be Heelan Ewes of course, although they look more like goats than our sheep. The frames are handmade by myself, with help from a friend who cut the wood. The wood was rescued from a pile of decades old cedar fence boards.
My abstracts arise from an intuitive process that usually involves many layers of paint and texture. Eventually the painting tells me the story. Then my intention takes over to refine the work. Our local landscape inspires most of my paintings but a recent trip to Europe prompted my painting of “TuscanDawn”. The process was intuitive until three cypress trees magically appeared!
I do commissions, mainly abstracts and abstract landscapes. You can contact me at lindasuekirstein @gmail.com or 250 472-2144.
