About Ilka:

I have always loved art but for much of my adult life, I did other things. I picked up my old pencils again in 2015, at a time when I was recovering from acute anxiety and burnout. In the beginning, it was part of the healing journey. Drawing is something I had learnt in my teens, and the process, the act of putting pen or pencil to paper, pulls my focus like few other things. I fall into drawing. For me, it is a way to still an over-busy mind.

Almost a decade later, my practice has expanded into other media, but working in 2D, I still mostly draw. This exhibit looks back on how my work has developed, from early pencil drawings to pointillism and ink – and ultimately, to abandoning paper as a substrate entirely to create works that blur boundaries between drawing and painting.

To me art is about experimentation, and personal style is a thing that evolves and shifts over time. The same is true for the ideas that drive my artistic expression – from nostalgia for time I spent in western Newfoundland, through an ever-lasting fascination with organic form, to deeper questions about identity, reality, and human-environment relations.
