Old School Gallery & Gifts
With the goal of creating a space for artists to gather and create, the Old School Gallery is managed by Connie Kaziechko. Connie is a long-time stained glass artist who was one of the four original artists to open studios in the classroom now housing Metchosin Soapworks. Connie's focus is mosaic stones and sea glass windows and frames which are sold at the gallery, Butchart Gardens and several gift shops from Alberta to Washington State. Terri is a self-taught artist and was one of the founding directors of Coast Collective.
The gallery is home to the works of 10 artists whose media include acrylic and oil painting, pottery, stained glass, metal, upcycled jewelry, mixed media, fibre and wood carving. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday, 11 - 4 with drop-ins on Sunday where any artist is invited to bring their paints, sketchbook, sewing, etc. and join the group for informal instruction, criticism and encouragement. On Sundays visitors are often invited to join the weekly potluck lunch around 1:00, and on Saturdays they are likely to walk in on a workshop in progress. Monday morning (during the winter months) a portrait drawing drop-in is led by two or more of our artists and is a great opportunity to learn from some very talented and experienced painters. There is drop-in fee of $5 for anyone one who decides to come on a regular or semi-regular basis for any of our drop-ins. Artists often spend most of their time creating alone in their studios and one of our most important objectives is to create a welcoming, non-judgemental space where artists, of every level, can come to share ideas and be inspired.
Since opening in September 2017 we have held several successful workshops, including making a botanical silk scarf, SeaGlass frame and an aromatherapy bracelet. For 2018, one of our goals is to continue to offer these workshops while adding additional classes in watercolour painting, resin jewelry and felting. Our workshops are listed on our Facebook page and any questions can be sent to Connie through that page or by emailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
