Ellen Desjardins – Fish in Ceramics

Spirit Bay Rockfish (ceramic)

September 30 to October 29, 2023

Ceramics can incorporate the points of view of the potter, the artist, the biologist, and the fisher. At Spirit Bay Pottery, Ellen Desjardins has taken on the challenge of replicating the beauty of West coast fish with the medium of clay. Rockfish, greenling and lingcod are among the fish she and her husband Michel catch from their canoe in Beecher Bay. The life-size ceramic fish become durable decorations on their house. They showcase the detailed coloration and physical variations of these rarely-viewed creatures that inhabit our local waters.

Ellen has worked in ceramics since 1996, continuing in her own studio when she moved to Spirit Bay in 2018. She also creates functional ware of all kinds, and loves to experiment with different types and combinations of clay and glazes. Special enjoyment for her comes from achieving beautiful food-safe surfaces, as well as shapes and textures that reflect the natural environment.
