Etsuko Kaji-Holley – “La Terre et le Soleil”

Wassily Kandinsky once said, “Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting … stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to walk into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?” The inspiration for abstract paintings comes from nature, organic shapes, sounds (especially music), feelings, and memories. Brush strokes are influenced by the practice of Japanese calligraphy and the compositions of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement). The motivation to paint originates from the flow of internal and external energy (Ki).

Currently, acrylic is mainly used as a medium along with other mark-making tools such as charcoal, pencils, and pastels. Experimentation with various brushes and tools, sometimes sourced from unconventional places like the kitchen cabinet, is common. Exploration of new styles and techniques continues through self-learning or attending workshops.

I recently spent a month at the Association of Tournefou in a small French village. This artist sanctuary, surrounded by nature and historical structures, inspired me. I sketched during morning walks and created abstract canvases. The body of work I produced will be shown in this exhibition. Both Tournefou and Metchosin inspire me with their similar elements.

You may find my recent paintings at the Ladysmith Art Council, Cowichan Valley Art Council in Duncan, Piggy & Paisley tea house in James Bay, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and various art markets on the island. I have participated in solo, duo, and group shows, including a major exhibition with Leona Petrak at the Cowichan Performing Art Centre gallery in 2024.

I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, mentors, fellow artists, and the community. Thank you to Metchosin Arts and Cultural Centre Association for this space and opportunity.
