About Martina:

Having graduated from the Material Art and Design Program (Hon. Fibre) at the Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCADU) in Toronto over 20 years ago, I continue to create art to help me make sense of life, the environment, and society’s woes. I thereby aim to give the viewer an opportunity to escape briefly from reality by making up their own stories from the work presented.

Earlier in my career, fibre (fabric and paper) was my main media, but over the years I have introduced other materials and take immense pleasure in repurposing disposables. I often combine found objects with pieces that are hand made by me, such as hand dyed or eco printed fibre. I work both in 2D and 3D as evidenced by my assemblages, sculptures, collages, and wall hangings. As an avid collector of all kinds of treasures, both natural and manufactured, I feel like an archeologist sifting through bits and pieces, from which I create narratives.

My work is often quite personal but with a broader appeal to the audience, especially when referencing social inequality.
