POV October 2025 – Marcia Semenoff

“Between the Dog and the Wolf:”

A poetic saying that describes the time between day and night, and between the known and the unknown. As a plein air painter, I have done a few night paintings, but I have never dived deep into that time of day when the light fades, and what I know about painting disappears, too. Colour is reduced to a specific muted palette, and form is gone. The feel and the weight of the night is all around you, but how to capture that elusiveness? In these works, I have tried in different ways, and media, to find that feeling between the comfort of light, and the unknown dark.
