About Heather:

Growing up near the Rocky Mountains in Calgary, Alberta, sparked my fascination with the outdoors. Guided by the passion I felt for the rugged Canadian landscape, I pursued studies in Earth Science at the University of Victoria and subsequently worked as a geologist for several years before making the decision to pursue art full-time. My artistic education has been shaped through local studio sessions and private mentorship, supplemented by continual learning through workshops and an ever-expanding collection of art literature.

As an avid hiker, I am constantly seeking out inspiring and paintable scenes. I have come to recognize a familiar pattern in the scenes that compel me to paint: the complexity of rugged landscapes, often punctuated by unusually beautiful features, such as the curve of a tree branch or the palette of colors on the water. Something always catches my attention, drawing me into the scene to absorb as much as possible in the moment. I take reference photos to use in my studio and occasionally create small studies on location with my portable easel.

In my studio, located in Victoria, BC, I meticulously study my references, contemplating how to compose a painting that captures the energy of the landscape. As I apply paint to the canvas, I consider the scene as a whole, focusing on the natural patterns inherent in the landscape. As my painting progresses, I delve into the subtle details that may not be immediately apparent at first glance. At times, I am overcome with a profound sense of awe as I bring an object to life on the canvas. This sense of wonder drives me to continue painting, exploring how best to honor the landscape. My preferred medium is oil paint, and I paint in a realistic style
