Liminal Spaces in Double Exposures

September 28 to October 29, 2023

In 1976, my dad gave me his old Pentax camera. I remember finding a way to stop the film from advancing to make double exposures. You could also run the film through the camera twice and create double xposures, or spend hours in a darkroom testing and waiting.  The three black and white pictures are from the 1970s.

Much later digital photography enabled this creative play to take place much faster. Six years ago, I began exploring different apps. on my iPhone.  This enabled me to create a range of retro-styled images based on various filters.

Every day in 2023 I try to walk 10,000 steps. My iPhone frequently pauses mid step as stop to ponder a subject.   I shoot it from different angles, knowing that I blend the images later on. From endless experimentation I began to find images that blended well with others. Sometimes, surprising results uncover new subject matter, and a new line of inquiry. I enjoy the interplay between intent and chance and my steps fly by with my watchful eye. I then adhere these prints to wood panels that I paint with acrylics.

(Also, with the extra room in this space I’ve added a few acrylic, and watercolour paintings.)

Enjoy!
